Locked In: Maloney Re-Signs as Head Coach
18 Oct 2022
Wagga Wagga Basketball Association (WWBA) has moved quickly to re-sign player coach Zac Maloney to another two years as Head Coach of the Wagga Wagga Heat.
Deep in a rebuilding period after the team being historically underpinned with player imports and with COVID preventing this, WWBA took the opportunity to rebuild the club with local talent.
Senior Representative Director Peter Lourey said with Zac at the helm, the 2022 Season saw our first win in over 800 days and the team were in finals contention until a few close losses sealed our fate.
"As an association we are extremely pleased with Zac’s leadership, team culture, youth development and game style and we wanted to reward his efforts and show our support by extending his contract," Mr Lourey said.
"I’m very grateful and excited to continue on as the Head Coach of the Heat. The group has worked hard the last 2 years, building the framework that will hopefully lead to further growth and success in the years to come," Maloney said.
Zac also works closely with the Junior Representative program and runs the new Academy Program, with both activities being pivotal in the association’s goal of developing local talent for the future.
Maloney said it’s an exciting time to be a part of our club.
"The board have done a great job at getting the wheels turning and giving us a clear direction on where they want to go, and we have a great group of coaches and an exciting pool of players that will help us achieve that."
Maloney's extension will keep him at the club for the 2023 and 2024 Waratah League seasons.
