Junior Comp - Changes to the Mercy Rule

27 May 2025

Supporting Fair Play & Player Growth

What’s NOT Changing?

When a team leads by 30 points or more, the scoreboard will pause. The game continues, but no additional points will be added to the visible scoreboard.

Why This Is a Good Thing for Our Players:

✅ Promotes respect for all players on court

✅ Keeps the game competitive and fun for both teams

✅ Gives more players a chance to play and grow their confidence

✅ Encourages skill-building over high scoring

✅ Builds a culture of sportsmanship across our comp

Letting Good Teams Play Good Basketball

What’s Changing?

We’ve removed previous restrictions that required the winning team to:

🚫 Run back to the baseline after scoring

🚫Make a set number of passes before advancing

🚫Alter their natural playing style

These rules no longer apply—even if a team is ahead.

Why the Change?

💡 Development Matters—For All Players

Strong teams and athletes deserve the chance to practice their full game, including fast breaks, defensive pressure, and strategic plays.

⚖️ Fair Play Still Applies

This isn’t a license to ‘go hard’ unnecessarily. The Mercy Rule (scoreboard pause at 30+) keeps things respectful.

🌱 It Prepares Players for the Next Level

Whether it’s moving into a higher division, the next age level, or representative basketball, players need exposure to real-game conditions.

🤝 We Trust Our Coaches and Officials

We believe in coaching with integrity. This change reflects our trust that teams can play hard, and fair.

🗣️ Feedback! We listen to our players, coaches, spectators and officials and do our utmost to create an environment where all kids feel inspired, included, and proud to play basketball.
